按照李小龙的设想，截拳道是：
1）它按照实战的不同情况将技击细分，如腿踢，拳打，粘打，贴摔，倒地缠锁等等，只要能出现的情况都要观察其特点；
2）它是开放性的理论体系：任何技法只要有用都可以纳入这个体系，故有言云：任何技法都可以是截拳道！
3）从有形走向无形（亦是有招到无招）：从基础的动作练习必须去理解了动作与动作之间本质，不然同样是一个动作不能称为在用截拳道的方法在练习。因为一旦明白招术的本质是相通的，即开始步入无型，也不在乎招式的名称，不过是一个名称罢了。

吸收有用的技术动作，加上自己的专长，从而增强实战能力，向学以致用的方向发展，探求和创造真正属自己的武技。当你学会了截拳道以手，你所发出的一拳一脚不应当仍是属于李小龙的，而应当是真正属于你自己的，并使你能有实战中发挥出最佳威力的任何门派的武功招式。
截拳道透过锻炼人类天生的身体武器，达到两个目的：
1、摧毁面对于你的敌人--消除自由、正义与人性的障碍；
2、摧毁任何纷扰你心灵之物，无须伤害人，但能克服自己的贪婪、愤怒与愚昧。

截拳道可以开启个人之智慧，她就像火炬一样照亮你的心灵，是一种生命之道，一朝向意志力与控制力的动作。截拳道并非伤残之法，而是一大道，朝向生命真谛追寻的坦荡大道。我们只有在了解自己时方足以看透旁人，而截拳道则是朝向了解自己之道而迈进。学习截拳道绝非单纯对知识的寻求，或是形式化的技巧累积，而是发掘自我不足之根源

According to Bruce Lee, Jeet Kune Do was:
1) It will be subdivided according to different situations of actual combat, such as kicking, punching, sticking, sticking and falling, locking and so on, as long as the situation can appear to observe its characteristics;
2) It is an open theoretical system: any technique as long as it is useful can be included in this system, so it is said that: any technique can be Jeet Kune Do!
3) From tangible to intangible (also is a move to no move) : from the basic movement exercise must understand the nature between movements, otherwise the same movement can not be called in the method of Jeet Kune Do in the practice. Because once UNDERSTAND the essence of moves is INTERlinked, that is, begin to step into no type, also do not care about the name of moves, but a name.

Absorb useful technical movements, plus their own expertise, so as to enhance the actual combat ability, to learn to apply the direction of development, to explore and create their own real skills. When you learn to do Jeet Kune Do with your hands, the punches and kicks you throw should not still belong to Bruce Lee, but should be truly your own, and enable you to perform the best in the field of any school of martial arts.
Jeet Kune Do serves two purposes by exercising the natural physical weapons of man:
1. Destroy the enemies who confront you -- remove the barriers to ***, justice, and humanity;
2, destroy anything disturbing your mind, do not need to hurt people, but can overcome their greed, anger and ignorance.
